Improvisation is foundational for most dancers, but for me, improv functions almost as a form of therapy.
When I made the switch to contemporary dance and was asked for the first time to contribute to the choreographic process, I often felt paralyzed by indecision. Growing up in ballet, I had never once been asked to speak up in rehearsal or asked to make a movement choice. Improvisation was how I started to find my voice and helped me discover my value as an artist. Improvisation allows me to dive into the uncomfortable territory of newness, bad choices, and dumb ideas. Along with all the rough drafts that don't work, sometimes you stumble on a nugget of an idea that encapsulates perfectly a thought that has been brewing in the back of your mind for weeks, and it's a relief to finally release something that had been ineffable before.
Improvisation is an integral part of my practice as a dancer and creator. I have chosen a small sampling of videos, please check out my Vimeo page for more.
